Starting Therapy? Here’s What You Should Know
Making the decision to begin therapy is a courageous step but it often comes with questions, nerves, and maybe even a bit of uncertainty.
At Stick By Me Counselling, we want you to feel safe, informed, and empowered from the start. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after a break, this guide answers common questions and shares insights to help you feel more confident in your decision.
Common Questions About Therapy
1. What is therapy really like?
Therapy is a confidential space where you can talk openly about what’s going on in your life without judgement. You’ll work collaboratively with your counsellor to explore challenges, patterns, and goals. It’s not about fixing you it’s about supporting you to better understand yourself and make meaningful changes.
2. What kinds of issues do people come to therapy for?
People seek counselling for a wide range of reasons, including:
Anxiety or depression
Relationship struggles
Addiction recovery
Trauma and PTSD
Grief and loss
Family conflict
Self-esteem or identity issues
Porn and Sex Addiction
Love addiction
Low sexual desire
ED
More issues on listed on the site
Some clients come with a clear goal in mind. Others just know something doesn’t feel right. Both are okay.
3. How long does therapy take?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients benefit from short-term, focused work (6–12 sessions), while others may need longer-term support. We’ll work with you to set goals and regularly check in on your progress.
4. Do I need a diagnosis to come to therapy?
No. You don’t need a label or diagnosis to seek support. Therapy is for anyone who wants to grow, heal, or feel more emotionally grounded whether or not there’s a formal mental health condition involved.
5. What if I’ve had a bad experience in therapy before?
That’s valid. Not every counsellor will be the right fit and it’s okay to name that. At Stick By Me Counselling, we welcome honest feedback and take the time to build trust at your pace.
