Healing From Trauma: What No One Tells You

Trauma changes you. Sometimes it happens suddenly  through a shocking event like an accident, assault, or loss. Other times, it builds slowly  from childhood neglect, emotional abuse, or growing up in survival mode.

Things we frequently hear from individuals:

“It wasn’t that bad, other people have it worse.”

“Why can’t I just move on?”

“I feel stuck, broken, or numb.”

But trauma isn’t about what happened to you it’s about what happened inside you as a result. And the good news? Healing is not only possible  it’s deeply personal, and it’s your right.

💔

What Trauma Really Is

Trauma isn’t always about one single event. It can be:

  • A toxic relationship that eroded your self-worth

  • A childhood where your emotional needs aren't met

  • Living in a body that was always in fight, flight, or freeze

When trauma goes unhealed, it can show up in ways you might not even connect:

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Avoiding emotions or intimacy

  • Anxiety, anger, or depression

  • Feeling numb, disconnected, or “too much”

  • Trouble sleeping or feeling safe in your own body

You are not weak. Your nervous system has simply been doing its best to protect you  often long after the danger is gone.

🌱

What Healing From Trauma Looks Like

Healing is not a straight line. It doesn’t mean forgetting, or pretending it didn’t hurt. It means learning how to:

  • Feel safe again  in your body, your relationships, and the world

  • Understand and regulate your emotional responses

  • Let go of shame and self-blame

  • Reconnect with parts of yourself that you had to hide to survive

Counselling offers a safe space to go at your own pace. You won’t be pushed or judged. Instead, you’ll be supported, validated, and gently guided.

Tools We Use in Trauma Therapy at Stick By Me Counselling

Each person’s healing is unique, but we often draw from approaches such as:

  • Trauma-informed talk therapy  for understanding your story and building emotional safety

  • Somatic (body-based) work  to help you reconnect with your body and calm your nervous system

  • Inner child work  healing the wounded parts of you that didn’t get what they needed

  • Parts work (like IFS)  learning to make peace with the inner parts of you that carry fear, shame, or anger

We’ll meet you exactly where you are whether you’re just beginning to explore your past, or deep into your healing journey.

💬

What Clients Often Say After Trauma Counselling

“I finally feel like I understand myself.”

“For the first time, I feel safe in my own body.”

“I’m not broken. I was protecting myself and now I can live differently.”

Healing doesn’t mean you forget what happened. It means you learn to live with it differently with more compassion, more choice, and more peace.

✨
